"We get calls once or twice a week where some municipality or business lost their trench drain grates over the week end. We suspect the grates were stolen and sold as scrap. And, as scrap metal prices increase, this will continue," he says. "To combat this, some of our customers are switching from cast iron to steel bar grating or fiberglass grating, which is easier to lock down or is not as attractive on the scrap market."

To keep up with this growing demand, Schroer and his team at Trench Drain Systems are developing a new website where visitors may search a database of trench drain grates to help identify the product they have or need to replace. The site, trenchdraingrate.com, is being designed to accept dimensional and compositional data from a visitor and return potential replacement grating options. If the grate currently doesn't exist in the database, the response will be suggested to make a custom grate.
